Type Help — Browser Origins & Path to Steam
History of Type Help: William Rous browser game, IGF nomination, Thinky Award, Evil Trout remaster partnership, and what carries into Galley House.
What Was Type Help?
Type Help is a free text-based browser mystery by solo developer William Rous, released on itch.io in 2025. Players typed commands into a terminal to open memory files tagged with scene codes like 01-QU-1-11. Inspired by Return of the Obra Dinn, Her Story, and The Roottrees are Dead, it became a cult hit — one Thinky Awards presenter noted it "overtook" players' lives within days of discovery.
The game was nominated for IGF 2026 Excellence in Narrative (winner: Perfect Tides: Station to Station) and won Best Free Game at the 3rd annual Thinky Awards. Evil Trout (creators of The Roottrees are Dead) partnered with Rous to remaster it as The Incident at Galley House on Steam, July 14, 2026 — with new music by Paul Alexander and art by Henning Ludvigsen.
What the Remaster Adds
- Visual novel presentation with hand-drawn art (Henning Ludvigsen from Roottrees)
- Full professional voice acting and original soundtrack
- Tactile 3D Seance Machine interface replacing terminal typing
- Present-day Part 2 with keycards, D&M staff, and expanded epilogue (~1 hour new content)
- Player character shift: Reya Beckon at D&M instead of the @ detective framing
- Steam achievements (15), cloud saves, controller support, Steam Deck verified
- Simplified Chinese localization at launch (per Evil Trout translation pipeline)
Compare in depth: vs Type Help. Type Help remains free on itch.io for historical curiosity.
Evil Trout Partnership
Robin Ward (Evil Trout) told GamesIndustry.biz that Roottrees sales directly funded Galley House's ~$250k budget. Ward describes the project as an adaptation rather than a polish pass like Roottrees — making abstract text puzzles concrete with art, VO, and the 3D Seance Machine. William Rous remained lead designer; Jeremy Johnston contributed production support from the Roottrees team.

William Rous credited Humano for the Japanese translation of Type Help on itch.io. The Steam remaster ships with English voice acting and UI localization including French, German, Japanese wiki coverage here, and Simplified Chinese per publisher announcements.
Japanese players may recognize scene-code logic from Type Help; the remaster's notebook and photo-card systems add visual confirmation layers the browser game lacked.
