Getting Started with The Incident at Galley House
First steps after launching on Steam: controls, prologue, memory machine tutorial, and your first notebook entries.
Launch & Settings
After purchasing on Steam (App ID 3641000), install and launch The Incident at Galley House. From the title screen, open Settings before starting a new game. Set text size, subtitle language, and input device — keyboard, controller, or Steam Deck touch. Cloud saves sync progress across devices logged into the same Steam account.
We recommend enabling subtitle speaker names during your first playthrough. Audio cues sometimes identify off-screen characters. Check controls overview for default bindings and accessibility options for color-blind modes and reduced camera motion.
Prologue as Reya Beckon
The prologue introduces Reya arriving at Galley House during a storm. You explore a limited set of rooms — mostly EN (Entrance) and LI (Living Room) — before accessing the memory machine. Follow on-screen prompts to examine objects; every highlighted item adds context to Reya's notebook preface.
Do not rush the prologue. Environmental text establishes family names, staff roles, and the curse rumor that frames all eleven deaths. When the memory machine activates, you receive your first scene code: typically a single-character QU scene tied to Victim 11, reinforcing that death order runs backward from eleven to one.
First Hour Checklist
- Complete memory machine tutorial: rotate, zoom, hotspot inspection.
- Open the notebook and read empty templates for characters, timeline, and locations.
- Confirm your first character identification if prompted — usually a prominently labeled family member.
- Unlock the manor map and cross-reference QU (Quail Lane) and EN (Entrance).
- Save manually once via the pause menu even though autosave is enabled.
Then proceed to how to play and begin Act 1 in earnest. Use the scene tracker tool once you have more than six codes logged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I play with a controller or mouse?
Either works. Mouse and keyboard offer precise hotspot clicking; controllers work well on Steam Deck and TV setups. See keyboard-mouse and controller pages for details.
When does the hint system unlock?
Hints become available after the memory machine tutorial completes in Act 1. Early hints are free; later tiers cost tokens earned by confirming notebook entries.
Can I change difficulty?
There is no combat difficulty. Optional "guided" mode increases hint frequency and highlights uninspected hotspots after long idle periods.
